🏘️ The Landscape of Homelessness by Rev. Susan Fortunato. The landscape of homelessness in Dutchess County is worsening due to a lack of affordable housing and the upcoming end of federal voucher programs. Local services are struggling to adapt as the unhoused population grows older, more vulnerable, and increasingly made up of working residents from the community. Read the article.
The Poughkeepsie Social Security office is now off the DOGE list. After intense pressure from the Hudson Valley community, the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office has been removed from the DOGE website’s “savings” list, offering renewed hope that services will resume once renovations are complete. This marks a significant win in the broader fight to protect Social Security, amid threats from federal policy shifts, mass layoffs, and growing concerns about reduced access for seniors. While this is a step forward, local leaders stress the need for ongoing vigilance, transparency, and support to ensure uninterrupted services for Dutchess County residents.

The State of the City Address. In her 2025 State of the City Address, Mayor Yvonne Flowers highlighted over $42 million in funding secured for revitalization, housing, and infrastructure projects, including the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative and the creation of a Business Improvement District. She emphasized efforts to tackle homelessness and modernize city planning through zoning updates, new housing initiatives, and partnerships with local agencies. Looking ahead, Flowers announced plans to redevelop the DeLaval waterfront site, renovate Spratt Park Pool House, and invest in youth programs.
