⚖️ Judge prevents the City of Poughkeepsie from implementing rent-stabilization law

To qualify for rent stabilization, a municipality must have a vacancy rate of less than 5%. Landlords are disputing the City of Poughkeepsie's vacancy rate study, which an independent group determined to be 4.03%, while landlords claim it is actually 6.69%. The court will hear arguments in September.

The Emergency Tenant Protection Act, which pertains to rent stabilization, applies to buildings constructed before 1974 with six or more units. If enacted, the act would protect tenants from eviction, grant them the right to renew leases, and freeze rents until a Rent Guidelines Board is established to adjust rents annually.
