THE DIGEST

Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress, through its annual Out of Reach report, reveals that rental housing affordability and availability continue to worsen in 2024 🏘️

Impact on Local Economy

  • More families rely on public assistance and are staying in hotels.

  • Many households are relocating from the Hudson Valley to find more affordable living options.

  • Declining birth rates.

  • Workforce shortage.

Facing These Challenges the Report Recommends 📝

  • More flexible zoning to different types and sizes of housing to meet demand.

  • Affordability mandates that help tenants between 30-50% of the area’s median income. (2023 Dutchess County median household income: $94,578)

  • More funding for affordable housing. (NYS Pro Housing Communities - the City is currently designated a pro-housing community and the Town of Poughkeepsie is on a path to.)

  • “Tools that can alleviate the challenges of high land costs and taxes.”

  • Balanced tenant protections.

Furthermore, “Our focus on housing must be paired with an honest conversation about the systemic throttles that could be choking wages while housing costs skyrocket. To preserve our well-being and our quality of life, the region must welcome and encourage more housing, rather than opposing and protesting it. We must be open-minded about different kinds of housing, including co-ops, mobile homes, smaller homes on smaller lots, and housing that utilizes new building technologies. Our land-use boards must commit to a process that is rational, predictable, and relatively quick, all while protecting human and environmental health.”

National Night Out 🇺🇸🚔️

Join the City & Town of Poughkeepsie in the annual National Night Out on August 6th. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
