Dutchess County Office Building

Dutchess County collected a record $265.8 million in sales tax revenue in 2025, according to a new report from the County Comptroller's Office. The total was up 0.8 percent from the previous year, though collections came in about $2.2 million below what had been projected in the county budget.

The report highlights the growing role sales tax plays in funding local government. Sales tax now accounts for 41 percent of county revenue and generates nearly three times as much money as property taxes. Every restaurant meal, vehicle purchase, and home improvement project contributes to a revenue stream that helps fund county services.

Two notable changes affected collections in 2025. State lawmakers approved an extension of the county's additional 0.75 percent sales tax through 2027, while New York also began applying sales tax to short-term rentals such as Airbnb and VRBO properties.

The largest sources of taxable sales remained automobile dealers, restaurants, department stores, gas stations, and building supply retailers. Together, those industries accounted for roughly 40 percent of all taxable sales activity in Dutchess County. Restaurants and department stores both saw growth during the year.

County officials have budgeted $268.4 million in sales tax revenue for 2026. Early signs are positive, with collections through May running nearly 6 percent ahead of the same period last year. Still, officials say factors such as fuel prices and broader economic conditions could affect revenues as the year continues.

Sales tax is one of the clearest indicators of the local economy's health. Strong consumer spending helps support county services and reduces pressure on property taxes, while slower spending can create challenges for future budgets.
