YOU Project Stalls, Community Grows Frustrated
Plans for the Youth Opportunity Union (YOU), a long-promised youth center at 35 Montgomery Street in Poughkeepsie, have hit a wall. Despite spending $4.49 million in taxpayer money since 2020, the site remains vacant, overgrown, and increasingly seen by neighbors as a safety concern.
In a recent special report, Dutchess County Comptroller Dan Aymar-Blair concluded that the County has not met its obligations under the 2020 agreement with the City, including failing to start construction or fully fund the project.
Some city leaders are now exploring the possibility of reclaiming the land, although this would require repaying the demolition costs. Mayor Yvonne Flowers criticized the delays, noting that similar projects elsewhere in the County have moved forward.
Residents and young people say the need for a youth center is greater than ever. As of now, the YOU remains a vision, not a reality.
