The Dutchess County Legislature has voted to proceed with establishing a homeless shelter at 26 Oakley Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. This decision has sparked opposition from City of Poughkeepsie officials and nearby residents, who are concerned about the impact on an already struggling neighborhood. A civil court action is anticipated. Alternative locations have been suggested, along with proposals to disperse the homeless population based on their areas of origin rather than concentrating all of the county's homeless individuals in one location. It's noted that many of those currently residing in the County's temporary homeless shelter are from other parts of Dutchess County, not Poughkeepsie.
Which approach do you support for addressing homelessness in Dutchess County?*We will share the results next week* |
Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation has filed for another rate increase just two weeks after the Public Service Commission approved a 5.5% increase for electric and 7.3% for gas. 📈 This new filing is deemed necessary by the utility to maintain safe and reliable service, but it has sparked concern among consumer advocates. The Public Utility Law Project criticized the request, highlighting the financial strain on nearly a quarter of Central Hudson's customers, who already owe over $130 million in unpaid utility bills. Rising electricity prices in New York are driven by the need for infrastructure upgrades, compliance with clean energy mandates, volatile fuel prices, increased demand, and operational challenges. Despite these justifications, the timing and frequency of Central Hudson’s rate increase requests are raising doubts about the company’s ability to manage its responsibilities effectively. The recent $62.59 million penalty imposed by the PSC for ongoing billing issues further exacerbates public skepticism.
