From Council Member to Mayor: A Journey Driven by Community Needs Mayor Flowers' path to public office began with a desire to address pressing issues in her neighborhood. "There was a lot of drug activity and gang activity," she recalled. "People asked me to run, and I eventually decided to do so." Serving on the city council for eight years, she made significant strides in improving the Fifth Ward by collaborating with local departments to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life. |
Encouraged by community members and her father, Mayor Flowers took the leap to run for mayor. Despite initial reservations about higher political roles pulling her away from community work, she realized the potential for broader impact. "People convinced me that you can make a big change in Poughkeepsie from being in that role," she said.
Exciting Initiatives and Future Projects
Mayor Flowers is enthusiastic about several upcoming projects. A key focus is the update of city zoning regulations to facilitate development in line with Poughkeepsie's vision. This effort aims to streamline processes for developers and attract investments that align with the city's goals.

"We're looking at several tools," she explained, including increasing housing density through zoning changes and offering incentives for developers to build workforce housing. Mayor Flowers emphasized the importance of a business-friendly environment to attract new enterprises and stimulate local growth.
