THE DIGEST

Empress Ambulance Expands With Northern Dutchess Paramedics Acquisition

Empress Ambulance Service, which operates out of Yonkers and Poughkeepsie, has acquired Rhinebeck-based Northern Dutchess Paramedics. The deal unites two long-standing EMS providers, with Empress pledging to maintain continuity of care and invest in staff and resources.

Northern Dutchess Paramedics, founded in 1994, has served Northern Dutchess, parts of Columbia County, and Litchfield County, Connecticut for more than 30 years. Founder Edward Murphy said the decision to join with Empress came from a shared commitment to patient care and employees.

The purchase comes amid a wave of EMS consolidation in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Empress previously absorbed Mobile Life Support Services in 2023 and now covers much of Ulster County under multi-year municipal contracts. While these moves may bring greater stability to emergency response, they also raise concerns about reduced competition and the risks of a single provider holding significant control over local ambulance services.

Local officials in Dutchess and Ulster counties continue to press for more state and federal support for EMS, citing the rising costs of providing critical coverage.

The Hudson River Rowing Association and Mid Hudson Rowing Association will host the Poughkeepsie Regatta on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The 3-mile race revives the historic course once used for the national collegiate championships, running from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park to the Mid-Hudson Bridge. Spectators can enjoy a full view of the action from the Walkway Over the Hudson. More info.
