THE DIGEST
![]() PSC Public Hearing - April 30th | Ratepayers lose, executives win? Central Hudson’s newly approved rate hike brings families higher utility bills while handing out $2.8M in executive bonuses. It's time the PSC remembers who they’re supposed to serve. |
At the April 30th Public Service Commission hearing held in the Town of Poughkeepsie, residents spoke out unanimously against the rate hike, citing soaring bills, threats of shutoffs, and a complete loss of trust. One resident called it “socialism for corporations”.
The Public Service Commission is responsible for protecting consumers and regulating utility monopolies in the public interest. Approving higher rates tied to corporate bonuses isn’t regulation; it’s enabling.
Housing Out of Reach in Dutchess County, Pattern Report Finds
A new Out of Reach 2025 report from Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress shows that average wages in Dutchess County aren’t enough to afford housing, whether you’re renting or trying to buy.
Even working full-time, a single adult earning the average local wage can’t afford a one-bedroom apartment at fair market rent. Rents would need to drop by hundreds of dollars per month to be considered affordable, or renter wages would need to rise dramatically.
The report also shows that rent increases continue to outpace wage growth, especially for low and middle-income workers. Renter wages now make up just 36% to 49% of the area’s median income, showing a widening affordability gap.
It’s not just renters who are struggling: most working households can’t qualify for a mortgage to buy the median-priced home in Dutchess County, falling short by over $100,000 in many cases.
The message is clear: without bold action on housing affordability, more working families will be priced out of the communities they call home. Full report.
