THE DIGEST

Emma Arnoff, a small business owner, social worker, and LaGrange Little League coach, has launched her campaign for Dutchess County Legislature in District 2, pledging to focus on affordability, mental health services, and small business support. Founder of The Sensory Space, Arnoff has firsthand experience addressing gaps in community resources and has trained organizations like Astor Services and area school districts to improve mental health support.

Recognized as a Forty Under 40 honoree, she is committed to innovative solutions that help families and businesses thrive. Drawing from her experience as a coach, she emphasized the importance of teamwork, resilience, and strategy—values she intends to bring to the legislature. “On the baseball field, we learn how to work together, handle challenges, and celebrate victories," Arnoff said. "With your support, we’ll hit this election out of the park.” District 2 covers Ward 3 in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Learn more.

Recently, I watched a documentary on Netflix titled Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy. The documentary discusses the tricks brands use to keep consumers consuming and the real impact of overconsumption on our world. It also discusses how certain brands design products that can’t be repaired.

Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress Center for Housing Solutions released its 2024 Hudson Valley Regional Housing Market Report. Housing prices in the Hudson Valley have reached record highs, with the median home price exceeding $300,000 across all nine counties and surpassing $400,000 in most.

Inventory remains near historic lows, with the number of homes for sale at half of pre-pandemic levels, fueling a strong seller’s market where many homes sell for over asking price. Meanwhile, new construction is overwhelmingly focused on rentals, limiting homeownership opportunities and further driving up costs. First-time buyers and working families are finding it increasingly difficult to purchase a home in Dutchess. Full report.
