In a resolute stance against Central Hudson's proposed electric and gas delivery rate hikes, the Town of Poughkeepsie Town Board unanimously voted to pass a resolution to reject the increases. The proposed hikes, which would have seen an estimated surge of 31.9% in electric delivery rates and 29.2% or 19% increase on the total gas bill, met firm opposition from local officials.

Bill Reuter, a member of the Town Board, expressed personal frustrations with Central Hudson's billing practices, deeming the proposed rate increase excessive. His sentiment was echoed by Supervisor Rebecca Edwards, who highlighted the town's efforts to rectify billing errors, citing Central Hudson owed an amount of $29,728.73 uncovered in three separate accounts. The Supervisor emphasized the challenges faced by ordinary homeowners in resolving such discrepancies and underscored the unfair burden placed on consumers.

Barbara Laid, another Town Board member, shared anecdotes of residents grappling with erratic billing cycles, receiving staggering bills after months of non-billing. Such practices, she emphasized, place undue financial strain on households and underscore the need for greater accountability.

Importantly, the Town Board emphasized that their concerns lay not with the frontline workers but with Central Hudson's management. This sentiment was reinforced by revelations from a 2022 report by the New York Public Service Commission, which exposed instances of errors, mismanagement, and lack of transparency within Central Hudson's leadership. The report highlighted systemic issues within the company's billing system, attributing them to negligent decision-making.

In light of these challenges, Central Hudson has since undergone leadership changes, with Christopher Capone assuming the role of CEO. However, the Town of Poughkeepsie's resolute rejection of the proposed rate hikes serves as a reminder of the community's vigilance in safeguarding consumer interests and holding Central Hudson accountable for their actions.
