Town Moves Forward with Police & Court Project

The Town of Poughkeepsie is entering the design phase for a new Police and Court Facility at 1 Overocker Road. Environmental reviews are expected to be completed by June, with design work continuing through the end of 2026 and construction anticipated to begin early next year.

Town officials previously explored acquiring adjacent land from the Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge for additional parking, but after the proposal was declined, architects redesigned the plan to fit the project entirely on Town property.

Town of Poughkeepsie Police Chief Joseph Cavaliere emphasized the importance of the new facility, saying:

“The Town of Poughkeepsie needs a police headquarters that is a resilient civic anchor designed to maintain critical operations during catastrophic events while fostering community trust through transparent, inclusive design… By balancing high-security mandates with welcoming public spaces and accessible community meeting rooms, the headquarters will evolve from a closed security outpost into a vital, resilient neighborhood asset.”

The project will also allow for the relocation of Town Hall in January 2027 to a portion of the Poughkeepsie Day School site on Boardman Road, where expanded community amenities are planned.

Officials say the new facility will replace the aging Tucker Drive building, which sits on a former landfill and has required ongoing repairs.
