THE DIGEST

Jason Myers

A Marist graduate reached football’s biggest stage in unforgettable fashion as Jason Myers ’13 helped power the Seattle Seahawks to a 29–13 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. The former Red Fox drilled five field goals, setting a Super Bowl record and supplying the bulk of Seattle’s scoring.

Myers’ calm, clutch performance crowned a remarkable season in which he topped 200 total points, a milestone no NFL player had reached before. Undrafted out of college, he climbed from smaller leagues to become one of the game’s most dependable kickers — a journey that has made his alma mater proud.

Dutchess County lawmakers are moving ahead with a $7 million investment from the Housing Trust Fund to help create hundreds of new homes, including affordable options, throughout the county. The funding package, advanced with strong legislative support, will support projects in Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Rhinebeck, and Amenia.

Legislative Chair Yvette Valdés Smith said the commitment reflects a focus on keeping Dutchess livable for families, seniors, and young residents alike, adding that local government has an important role to play in confronting rising housing costs. Environment Committee Chair Lisa Kaul echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the need to provide people with meaningful opportunities to remain and thrive in their communities.

The “Great White Hurricane of 1888”

In March 1888, what began as an ordinary late-winter weekend turned into the most devastating snowstorm the Hudson Valley had ever experienced. A powerful coastal weather system brought days of blinding snowfall, hurricane-force winds, and towering drifts that buried streets, halted trains and streetcars, and cut off communication as telegraph lines collapsed. With forecasting still primitive, residents had little warning, and many awoke to find themselves trapped in their homes or forced to tunnel through the snow just to reach the road.

Despite the chaos, local accounts describe a surprisingly upbeat response. Neighbors helped one another dig out, volunteer crews formed to reopen walkways, and much of the population, professionals and laborers alike, grabbed shovels to restore some sense of normalcy. Children played in the drifts, sleighs filled the streets, and newspapers mixed awe with humor as they documented what became one of the first major storms widely photographed.

Beyond the immediate destruction and tragic loss of life across the Northeast, the blizzard pushed cities to modernize. In the years that followed, utilities were placed underground and urban transit systems expanded, changes meant to prevent such paralysis from happening again. For communities along the Hudson, the storm became a defining moment, remembered for both its severity and the resilience shown in its aftermath.
