THE DIGEST
The Town of Poughkeepsie Town Board voted 6–0 on February 4th to approve bonding as an initial step toward eventually purchasing the Poughkeepsie Day School property, part of a broader plan to relocate Town facilities. The move is driven primarily by the long-delayed need for a new Police & Courts facility, as the current building, dating back to 1995, is situated on an uncapped landfill, is sinking, and requires ongoing, costly repairs.
Under the plan, the current Town Hall site at 1 Overocker Road would become the location for the new Police & Courts facility, while Town Hall would relocate elsewhere. Town officials emphasized this is not the same proposal considered between 2020 and 2022. The updated approach is expected to be less expensive, more workable for police, courts, and residents, and would also allow for expanded public services, including new indoor and outdoor space for the Town’s summer camp program. Strong Towns Poughkeepsie met on Thursday, January 22, bringing together residents interested in people-centered approaches to planning and development. Strong Towns focuses on helping communities become more financially resilient through walkable neighborhoods, incremental housing, and the better use of existing infrastructure.
