Two Fires Severely Damage Historic Buildings at the Hudson River State Hospital Site
On June 3 and June 8, two fires broke out at the former Hudson River State Hospital. Fairview Fire Department took the lead in controlling the conflagration, assisted by mutual aid from many surrounding fire districts, as well as emergency assistance from the Town of Poughkeepsie Water, Building, and Highway Departments.
The fire was contained by the evening of the 3rd, but a second blaze broke out in the early morning hours of June 8th. Firefighters had that controlled by late morning.
Construction on the historic Kirkbride building began in 1867, with the hospital opening its doors in 1871. Further construction and additions continued into the 20th century. In 1989, the Kirkbride building was designated a National Historic Landmark. The hospital consolidated most of its operations by the late 1990s and closed entirely in 2003.
Town of Poughkeepsie Supervisor Rebecca Edwards said, “Much is not yet known after this week’s fire, but some of the historic buildings the Town designated for preservation have survived. Hundreds of units of housing are authorized, and the Town has secured a grant to build a new sewer line up to the historic central hilltop enabling revitalization.”

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze but were unable to contain the fire as it overcame the historic Kirkbride administration building.
