Poughkeepsie is finalizing a comprehensive zoning reform as part of its long-term planning project, PK4Keeps. The proposed changes aim to simplify regulations, encourage diverse housing options, and make the city more adaptable to future growth. A key feature of the reform is the introduction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in single-family districts, which has sparked debate but is seen as a solution to the housing crisis. A public hearing on the proposed zoning changes will be held on September 17 at City Hall. Learn more.

📱 Poughkeepsie Middle School will require students to lock up their cell phones in Yondr pouches during the school day, following the success of a similar program at Poughkeepsie High School. The initiative aims to improve student engagement and attendance by reducing distractions. Students will receive the pouches each morning and can only unlock them when they leave school or in an emergency. We reported on the impact of phone-free schools here.

We Asked Readers Last week: Do you agree with County Executive Sue Serino's plan to designate the proposed homeless shelter for families only? 60% said yes while 40% said no.

In addition, we received a comment: “If the facility is there, let's use it and, I assume, keep them in the school they need. My understanding is that our mayor, police, and social services are committed to addressing the situation of each homeless person in the city. If they don't otherwise have their own housing, we need placement options outside of the city.”

CIVIL NEWS ⚖️

🌉 The Poughkeepsie Common Council approved a $170.6 million Capital Improvement Plan, developed in collaboration with Mayor Yvonne Flowers' administration. The plan, covering projects from now until 2029, outlines key infrastructure priorities, including bridges, public buildings, parks, and equipment. It identifies 64 projects, with 13 fully or partially funded at nearly $30 million. The plan's approval, ahead of the August 31 deadline, reflects strong cooperation between the council and administration. Mayor Flowers emphasized the importance of modernizing infrastructure to avoid maintenance backlogs, while Council Member At Large Da'Ron Wilson praised the collaborative effort, noting that a cohesive plan could help the city secure additional federal and state funding. More details.

🚨 The Town of Poughkeepsie Town Board unanimously voted to use its first opioid settlement funds, approximately $80,000 annually, to hire a mental health peer counselor. This counselor, provided by People USA, will work alongside the Town of Poughkeepsie Police to assist with addiction and mental health cases. The initiative aims to build trust and connect those in need, including the homeless, with supportive services. The program will be integrated this autumn with the police department's new Community Policing Unit.
